The Canterbury A&P Association’s annual Show has delighted visitors – young and old – every year since it began in 1863. Lured by the tastes of gourmet food and wines, stomach-turning rides, feature entertainment, and the sights and sounds of the farmyard, the Canterbury A&P Show has become an annual ritual for Cantabrians. With around 100,000 people attending every year, the Show is the largest community event in the country.

The Farmyard

Children (and big kids at heart) will be able to get up close and personal with lambs, calves, puppies, ducklings, chickens and plenty of other young animals at the Mike Greer Homes City Farmyard. This petting area is a great way to introduce children to animals they may only have seen in story books.

New Food and Wine Village

If food and wine is your thing, you’ll find plenty to tantalise your taste-buds in the brand new Food and Wine Village. We’ve given this showtime favourite a major overhaul with the addition of a seated food hall and an outside wine courtyard overlooking the entertainment on the Village Green. As per usual you’ll be able to enjoy gourmet foods from around the world and watch cooking demonstrations from some of New Zealand’s top chefs in the Westinghouse Demonstration Kitchen, including Jax Hamilton on Friday 11 November.

Entertainment

You can’t beat the excitement of the wood-chopping arena or the fast-paced action in the shearing and wool-handling competitions! These competitions attract the best competitors from across Australasia.

Live Music is one of the cornerstones of the Canterbury A&P Show and there will be plenty to keep Show Visitors of all ages entertained including New Zealand’s ultimate super group on Friday 11 November. The Yeah Nah Nahs include Jason Kerrison (OpShop), James Reid (The Feelers), Julia Deans (Fur Patrol), Rodney Fisher (Goodshirt) and Dean Lawton (Tadpole). Support acts on each day are: Jody Direen, Assembly Required and SansTribe.

Other entertainment includes the fast and furious Endurocross motorcycle competition, the ever-popular Shetland Grand National steeplechase, the dog trials, carnival rides, Ultimate Canines dog show, and a whole lot more.

Livestock and Equestrian Competitions

Over the three days of the Show around 3000 animals will compete in more than 1700 classes for best in show titles and over $100,000 in prize money. For the farming community it’s a chance to demonstrate the results of their hard labour; for city folk it’s a chance to see at close quarters some of the best cattle, sheep, alpaca, llama, poultry, pigs and goats that this proud farming region has to offer.

This year the Canterbury A&P Show is hosting a Royal A&P Beef Cattle event – meaning the best of the best will be on show come 9 November!

The 2016 Canterbury A&P Show will be held Wednesday 9, Thursday 10 and Friday 11 November. The Show will open from 8am – 5.30pm each day.

Timings are approximate and subject to change.
